Ammonia | Ports
Wilhelmshaven & Immingham
A flurry of activity around the ammonia sector since delivering the masterclass at the World Hydrogen Congress in Rotterdam.
Sometimes described as the workhorse of the hydrogen economy, ammonia is being stimulated by recent definitions as to what exactly constitutes green ammonia and make it an even more tradeable commodity. Ammonia should only be labelled as “green” if the production process emits less than 300g of CO2-equivalent (CO2e) per kilogram of NH3.
Activity revolves around several strategic plans and especially with front runner ports now commencing major ammonia infrastructure projects.
Two trailblazer projects, one in Wilhelmshaven in Northern Germany and the other at Immingham in the UK may interest the community?
Wilhelmshaven
Immingham, Humberside Ammonia plant
Initially a conduit for the import of green ammonia (NH3) from NEOM in Saudi Arabia to be converted to green hydrogen and would see ammonia imported for port-centric hydrogen production, with carbon also shipped in for storage.
Jetty and topside infrastructure (including the associated pipework on the jetty) would comprise the principal development. The pipeline and site areas for the transfer, storage, and processing of the ammonia.
The wider aspirations for Humberside:
With progress at Rotterdam and elsewhere there are signs of traction for the shipping and storage of ammonia.
