I need a higher soap box. One of the recurring themes of my posts is that the climate community is its own worst enemy.

The politicization of climate change is a result of an ill-conceived strategy that discounted the massive challenges inherent in enacting social, behavioral, and infrastructure changes.

The result: the failure to achieve virtually any of its goals.

What is has achieved is record levels of solar energy. Thatโ€™s made the solar industry happy (and wealthy), but has done little to curtail emissions.

And all the low-hanging fruit that facilitated achieving those meaningless records over the last 15 years - cheap money, no inflation, and relatively easy grid connection points - are gone.

The desire to force society to transition to solar, wind, EVs, and electric appliances have ticked off those on the right-side of the political spectrum. To a degree, the election of Donald Trump is a reaction to a heavy-handed โ€œwe know whatโ€™s good for youโ€ strategy.

Another tactical mistake: morphing the goal of reducing emissions into a goal of immediately eliminating fossil fuels. In terms of strategies that ranks up there with the Maginot Line in sheer stupidity. Young people look it up.

What has set me off to lambast the climate community for its inability to implement anything close to resembling a viable strategy?

The World Meteorological Organizationโ€™s (WMO) ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™‚๐™ก๐™ค๐™—๐™–๐™ก ๐˜พ๐™ก๐™ž๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š 2024 report. Here are some highlights:

โ–ถ Current long-lived greenhouse gases hit a record-high of 151% of preindustrial levels.

โ–ถ CO2 is at its highest level in at least the last 800,000 years, if not longer.

โ–ถ Methane levels are at 256% of preindustrial levels.

โ–ถ The past 10 years were among the 10 warmest on record.

โ–ถ The rate of sea level rise has doubled in the last 10 years.

โ–ถ And hereโ€™s a shock: the 1.5ยฐC Paris Agreement target was exceeded in 2024.

To further illustrate how tone-deaf the climate community is, check out this quote by WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo:

"While a single year above 1.5 ยฐC of warming does not indicate that the long-term temperature goals of the Paris Agreement are out of reach, it is a wake-up call that we are increasing the risks to our lives, economies and to the planet."

Climate advocates can learn something from those who suffer from addiction. The first step in overcoming an addiction is to admit you have a problem.

The climate community has a problem: itโ€™s addicted to a delusional plan.
